Edit: Hi everyone! Super big thanks to Friendly for linking to me. This website is pretty much discontinued and I now write over at my new website for the time being, with a special D&D project in the works... Thank you!

I'm growing to like Zulu's Board Game Cafe more the more I visit it. Today I ventured onto the patio for the first time. It was sunny out at the warmth of the day permeated the barrier made by the tent that connected to the door back inside. Fairy lights (though not plugged in) lined the interior of the tent and a space heater took up the space in the center of the area. On metal chairs over a grated table, I met for the first time with a group of people from two other robotics teams for some evening dice-rolling.

I've been involved with D&D for a long time, at least for as much history as I've got, since many people have played longer than I've been alive. For the past few years, I've DMed. Playing didn't really strike me. I was much more interested in already knowing how the world would play out and having that sense of security versus having to react to such unknown. Coincidentally, I made the switch from playing to DMing around the time I started to dabble in theatre arts.

It's been two years now. I'm acting in productions, I'm learning to improvise, and I can build characters quickly. I was starting to wonder what playing was like again when I began teaching others how to build acting characters quickly, how to establish relationships, and how to stick to goals. I looked back at my PHB and decided that it was time for me to play again, or at least to give it a try.

I showed up to my table with an idea and an order of fries (do recommend, they're delicious with honey mustard): A three-foot-tall dragonborn monk. After some laughter, I was encouraged to go on with it and joined a party with a furbolg, a bone-collecting dwarf, and a few others in a motley crew off to go dungeon-diving. At last, I was Sparky, and the world was her Uber.

I'm excited to keep playing. I'm learning quite a bit about DMing from going back to play from such a long break. Seeing how I approach NPCs and challenges gives me much more insight as to how my players might see my characters and locations.

I'll update you guys when there's more!

Once upon a time, I forgot February was short and then suddenly Emerald City Comic Con started at the end of the week.

Oops.

In case any of you are around, I'd love to high-five and take a selfie. Here are my paneling and cosplay plans for the weekend:

Thursday, March 1st - I have a calculus quiz, rehearsal, Science Club, and robotics, so...uh, no. Can't do that.

Friday, March 2nd - I'll be around from 10 AM-1 PM on the show floor, then I hope to enjoy the gaming in the evening. I'll be in cosplay in the morning as a TANIS hunter from the podcast TANIS (keep looking). Here's how my cosplay is going so far:

It'll be a little more work before I'm completely ready. I still need to make the sign out of cardboard and distress an outfit. Nothing a little thrift-shopping won't solve.

Saturday, March 3rd - I'll be around all day long! I won't be in cosplay because I'll be paneling at 2:45 in roomhere on the panel BREAKING THE BAMBOO CEILING! I love this panel and I'm so happy to be continuing it at ECCC this year. I'll probably head out around 5-ish.

Sunday, March 4th - I'll be around all day again in cosplay as Juno Steel from the Penumbra Podcast. That cosplay is pretty much done, I just need to figure out some intricacies with props and pose:

So far, I have to finalize outfits for both characters, but hair/makeup is looking great and I'm excited to take these cosplays on...uh, public transportation...

We'll have to see how that goes.

Anyways, hope I can see some of you guys there!
This is a preview of the full post, available by hitting the 'read more' just above or below.

Hey! As my break from rehearsals winds to a close, I have been making sure to get my Guild Wars 2 fix in before I just don't have the time as often. I've been enjoying playing with my friends on Discord voice chat, and it's nice to play solo but not be alone. Anyways, I picked up my Revenant, Cricket Luana, over the past few days, and learned to play them again.

So far, what I'm observing is that...well, Rev is pretty tricky! At least more difficult to get the hang of than Ranger, which has been my main for years. However, I'm starting to unwind a little from my previous attitude of perfectionism when playing, and that's paying off. I'm learning so much more about Guild Wars 2 and I appreciate the intricacies of every class a little more.

I spent most of my time in Lornar's Pass (one of my favorite areas in-game) and Timberline Falls, splitting my time between event-following and mountain-climbing. What I like about the Norn-focused areas is the topographical levels available everywhere. I love finding the peaks of mountains...and the occasional vista to go with them!

A brief life update, since I've gotten some questions, and also want to explain any weird lapses of activity in the next month-ish:

- Theatre: I got into Les Miserables!! I'm one of the revolutionaries/barricade boys. I'm really honored and look forward to participating in such a great show.
- Robotics: Nationals-bound! We're competing in West Coast Super-Regionals in a few weeks.
- Emerald City CC: I'll be paneling! I'll post later this week about that...
- School/Life: A few schools have accepted me, I'm waiting on four more to get back to me. Things are looking good so far, though. Fingers crossed...

- Site Redesign: How are you guys liking the new look? I'm working out some bugs right now, like the header ballooning whenever you scroll back up, etc. I'm also thinking of making rotating banners like I had a few years ago when this site was Destiny's Travels. I can't find anything on the WayBack Machine to explain so far, but I'll keep searching...

Some questions for you all:

- What is your opinion on complex MMO classes? What do you think is a good learning curve/balance? What's the hardest character class you have ever played in an MMO/game in general?
This is a preview of the full post, available by hitting the 'read more' just above or below.

I stole a fry from Ethan's plate, then retracted my hand back into the safety of my DM screen. "Reenor approaches the pile of garbage as it lets loose another roar," I described, "With one final, triumphant strike, the garbage begins to fall away, letting loose a stench so awful you feel your lunch coming back to greet you."

I flipped a page in my notebook. I had written this mini-adventure all this morning, and I was impressed at how well it had gone. "At last, the garbage settles, and you are that whatever monstrosity that once terrorized this sewer is now gone forever. A little head shakes away soiled papers at the very center of the heap, and you hear a little...meow."

"It's the lady's cat, isn't it?" Laughter sent warmth around the table following a grueling battle. "Oh my gosh, it must be."
This post was going to be called "Can We Save Gigantic?". This post was going to be my story of this game being the only MOBA I liked and an invitation to join me. This post was going to be about how I could completely relax in the hour of free time I get per week.

But it's not. This post was going to be full of hope, but it's not. Gigantic will shut down on July 31st, 2018.

I'm gonna sit and stew and see if there's anything I can add to this post.
*falls out of the void and crash-lands in 2018* Oh my gosh, hi.

Thanks for sticking it out with me. College apps, my first quarter of community college (dual enrollment rocks!) and my first big show with the theatre department really took it out of me. And now I'm ready to do literally the same thing except with scholarships and now my good old gaming blog. Let's break down how things have been, how things are going, and how things will be...

It's time for me to take another quick break. I'm in the process of slightly rebranding the website, but I'm also needing life to step in and take control. As you may or may not know, I'm 17 and a high school senior, which means it's time for me to start applying to schools! I'll be back when that's under a little more control.

Wish me luck!

Hey! So quick update on how the GW2 kids are doing. I think I've finally found a new home in an MMO after a few years of soulsearching. I approached GW2 with a little bit of caution at first...ah, just kidding. I loved it and knew after five minutes that I would be with it for a long time coming. After a few years of on-and-off school-interrupted play, I at last got my ranger chick to L.80. Re-introducing, the design tropes that I thought were cool two years ago...

When I was younger, perhaps in the year before I started Soultamer Gaming (as a tiny Wizard101 blog that didn't even share the name) I was in the Redmond, Washington Pokemon TCG League. I had a couple of decks of cards poorly filled with a high variety of Pokemon and too many kinds of energies. And let me tell you - I felt like I was all that. There was something so much fun about going to the game store and talking with your regulars about the game.

This being said, I was tiny. I didn't know what good friendships were, and I got fooled out of good cards through trade quite often. The atmosphere didn't promote a ton of learning, and I was often picked on for not knowing how to play the game, or swearing like a little kid (which meant not swearing at all). After I put my decks away the following school year, I didn't really expect to go back to TCG games - that is, until more and more of my friends began playing Magic: The Gathering. Even my English teacher, who kept d20s on his desk, played students in his room after class. My friend Carl liked a Facebook post the other day that advertised a Magic open house for new players at a local game store, and I decided to try my hand at it.
I'm back! School was rough, but it should be at least a little better next year. Whether or not it pans out like that, I'm back for the summer! Here are a few goals that I'm keen on getting started on.
As a reward for finishing up my AP tests, I bought myself NieR: Automata as a You're Free present. My only previous exposure to NieR was bits of soundtrack that I found online and subsequently fell in love with. Knowing that any game with the name NieR in it would sound amazing, I quickly consulted my friends and the internet for reviews. Hearing that it was a keystone game of its time, a masterpiece, and "not for me, but give it a shot" by my friend, I decided to take the leap, and...oh my gosh, I think I'm in love.

Hey there! Long time no post. Robotics and AP classes have been kind of insane. However, when my new friend Juliana mentioned to me the upcoming LVL UP EXPO* in Las Vegas, Nevada, I agreed to help promote what sounds like a fun event.

I'm a convention-goer. Whether it's big events like PAX or ECCC, or chiller, smaller events like GGC or the Washington State Midsummer Renaissance Faire, I've become an expert over the years on what it means to be really, really prepared for a convention, especially a gaming convention. Here are my top five tips on getting ready for LVL UP this year!

disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with any conventions mentioned. I'm not getting paid for this. I'm literally just a teenager trying to procrastinate on my calculus homework. An asterisk (*) indicates promotional material that I was requested to use, but I do not necessarily disagree with. I would never promote anything I disagreed with. What's even the point?

Life is crazy. CRAAAAAAZY. When I'm not at rehearsal, I'm building robots or doing homework or trying to exercise more than once a year or maybe doing one daily in GW2 if I have a minute to spare after all that. Junior year isn't fun.

If I ever have time to myself, though, I try to spend it studying what I want to study, which is conveniently not any of the classes that I'm taking. My current freetime subjects include forensics, microbiology, and epidemiology, as well as engineering fundamentals and CAD. It was when I was poking around at some physics and SolidWorks that I got the idea to open Besiege up again. Curly (who is still my best bud and says hi) got it for me waaaaaay back when, and I thought to myself that maybe now that I'm actually building things in the real, I could get a lot more mileage out of it.
Wow, this past week has been crazy! After having a blast at GGC paneling and playing games, I immediately fell ill and spent the better part of the last several days coughing, sleeping, and catching up on work. I'm up to all sorts of junior-year mayhem, from calculus to taking my PSAT tomorrow, so playing games has been a really nice luxury lately. I did happen to get on GW2 and make a Charr Guardian character, so that was lots of fun.

I've also been having a really, really fun time playing Starr Mazer DSP, a game that was given to me to play and review (yes, review coming soon!). Starr Mazer DSP was one of many awesome games I got to give a shot at GeekGirlCon this year, where the video gaming section was slightly larger and included a VR area and a co-op lounge as well as a row of single-player games. There are three games that truly stood out to me.
Hello! Quick post to let you all know that I'm so excited to be a panelist and a press pass holder at GeekGirlCon this year! GGC means so much to me and I have been given free admission for what I'm contributing, which is amazing and I want to thank the staff of the convention so much.
Oh, hey, it's been a while since PAX, hasn't it...

As it tends to every year, school starts for me after PAX, crunching together con coverage, GeekGirlCon prep, and general blogging all in one forgotten section that kind of falls off of the to-do list when juxtaposed against school, robotics, and theatre. Nonetheless, I'm here and just barely hanging on as usual! Something that's helped me stay on track and not crash, however, has been finding little bits of time here and there to play games. Here are my top 5 games that have kept me sane while I plug on by.
Welcome Back to PAX! - Every year, I tell myself I'll write about my PAX adventures by the day, and I always end up too tired to even try. OK, I'll give you some space to laugh at me- I pre-ordered No Man's Sky back in March. However, knowing that I was going to play the game no matter what, I felt like ordering it while it was on a lower price would do me better just in case there were issues. As No Man's Sky has just become available for people to play on PC, I've started my attempt to play it out at least to the point where I will have spent a dollar for each hour, forty hours in total, before making the decision on whether I'd like to keep the game in my normal repertoire or let it sit in my Steam library without feeling so much shame on my part. So far, I've played for two hours, and here are my thoughts so far:
Now that the PAX hype has picked right back up with passes in the mail, convention season seems to be getting underway. For me, that means the WA State Midsummer Renaissance Faire in just a couple of weeks - and a cool cosplay to go with it - as well as PAX, and, you guessed it, more cosplay. Finally in October, I have GeekGirlCon, where I'll be paneling and reporting. With everything that's going on for me and many, it's just about the right time to raise a few good points about making the most out of your convention season.

Anyways, it's been great so far! For those who have been completely blind to the whole world for the past day, Pokemon GO (real-life Pokemon exercise-encourager phone app from god) is here and ready to play for anyone who's in the US, Australia, New Zealand, probably Canada by tomorrow, and ready for servers to be crash-y as heck!

My first impressions are as follows:

Character style is kind of cool. I chose the male character because his hair was closer to mine and I liked his pants. I wish style options included more variety between pieces instead of just color differences, but I'm alright with it. This game is about Pokemon, not me.

OK, whoever took the name Soultamer ought to battle Pokemon with me for who gets the name

So I would definitely want to jog everywhere with this. It's fun to run around and actually get random rewards in the shapes of happiness. Plus, there are a ton of little shop stations across town, so it wouldn't be hard for me to keep having a good time.

When do the break-and-enter charges happen?

The Zubat I wanted was in my neighbor's yard.

Pokemon GO, rated M for Morality Crises

When are we going to call them Gokemon?

Phone dead, went back to write a blog post

Segment ideas include: GoPro Pokemon GO runs, Pokemon GO hunts with Seattle Crew, portable phone battery charger reviews

My Pokemon Journey starts tomorrow. Yes, because I'm lazy, I didn't start straight out of Pallet Town the second I got my starter and in fact spent one last night at home. More soon...

II, As Told Through Star Trek GIFs (spoilers)Let's talk Pirate101 and the fact that I just finished Book 15 <strike>oh my freaking gosh</strike>. It was a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. In the beginning, I was this huge pessimist. I wasn't expecting anything great out of this next expansion. Only five levels for the big finish of Kane? If you say so...
